Mook & Fair Interview
by Adam Bernard
For those living in Connecticut it didn't come as much of a surprise when it was announced that Mook & Fair would be opening for some of the Anger Management Tour artists. The Waterbury duo have been making noise within the state for quite a while and this is just the next step in their journey. Recently Mook & Fair sat down with The Reality Box to talk about who they'll be opening for, what it means to them, and what audiences can expect from their shows.
Adam Bernard: For the people who aren't familiar with you, fill them in on what Mook & Fair are bringing to the musical landscape?
Fair: I think a lot of energy that's missing from the industry man and a lot of originality.
Mook: An up north crunk, that's the twist we're bringin to the game that hasn't been done
AB: Describe "Up North Crunk" for everyone.
F: We do a lyrical stuff that hasn't been done over that type of music before. It's a beautiful blend. It's something that we stumbled upon on our music. We have a joint called "Get Off The Wall" and I said it in the verse and we said "that's what we're doing."
AB: Talk to me about your association with 721 Productions and the Anger Management Tour artists.
M: We gave our demo to 721 Productions and we didn't even have to audition, we just got the call back and found out we were automatically in it. Off of that they set up a show with DJ Kay Slay at a club called The City.
AB: How did the performance with the Drama King go?
F: We met dude after we came off the stage, he asked us where we were from and we screamed out Connecticut and we had a nice little crowd at the bar with us. We really tore it down.
M: Before we started anything he told us he was looking for artists to work with. We tore the stage down and as soon as we got off stage he had some people send for us and we started chattin with him for a second and exchanged numbers.
AB: That's a nice hook up, who are you going to be opening for in the coming weeks?
F: Young Jeezy, T.I., Mike Jones and G-Unit.
M: There should be more added to the list.
AB: What are you hoping to gain from this experience?
F: Experience, exposure, just being on stage with those big people.
M: And the biggest thing of all is putting Connecticut on the map. Atlanta and those other spots need to know Connecticut is alive and kickin. We about to let em know what it is.
AB: What's a Mook and Fair performance like?
M: No sittin down, hands up. When we perform our goal is to make the people in crowd sweat. We go up there and rock it.
F: We be buggin so much it's contagious you gotta do it, you gotta get up and scream.
AB: Is everything you'll be performing off of "Welcome To Guttabury?"
M: All this is material from the album. Right now we're doing music, though, so if we come across a nice song to perform that's what we'll add to the list to perform.
AB: Is there already a plan in place for what's next after the tour?
M: More promotion, we basically live in the studio. We got the futon in here, it is what it is.
AB: Where do you think your work ethic comes from?
F: Years and years and years of seeing other people come up and not get through the right door.
M: And us pushing each other.
AB: How long have you known each other?
F: 14 years, since we were both around 8 years old.
M: Back then we were both doing music but it was separate, we were just chillin back then, doing things that kids do.
F: After high school we bumped into each other and realized we were both doing music.
M: We collaboed a lot and figured f**k it we might as well do this together.
AB: What are your thoughts on Connecticut's current Hip-Hop scene?
F: I think everybody needs to get on our back and ride the wave because we're comin.
M: Once we get on it together it's a wrap.
F: And as long as people are doing positive things you gotta support that, you can't knock anybody's hustle.
AB: Lastly, what do you feel makes you stand out within Connecticut?
F: We are versatile, we can do anything. We're not just hardcore, we can do any kind of music, we have R&B singers who jump on hooks for ladies, we do the bouncy stuff, we do the old school with me and Mook goin off each other's words. There's a lot of longevity with the music so that's how we are.
